Seven Wonders of the World.GREAT MAUSOLEUMS |
Taj Mahal. Agra, India.
Mausoleum, large sepulchral monument containing a chamber in which funeral
urns or coffins are deposited.
The name is derived from the tomb erected at Halicarnassus (now Bodrum, Turkey) to King Mausolus of Caria (flourished about 376-353 BC) by his widow, Artemisia (d. about 350 BC). It was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

A notable American mausoleum is the 19th-century tomb of President Ulysses S. Grant in New York City. General Grant National Memorial, popularly known as Grant's Tomb, is the final resting place of Ulysses S. Grant.
Other instances of magnificent mausoleums are the tomb of the Roman emperor Hadrian, now Castel Sant'Angelo, and that of Emperor Augustus, both at Rome; and the mausoleum of King Frederick William III of Prussia, at Charlottenburg in Berlin.
